One of Justin & I’s favorite traditions is visiting New York City during the holidays. It’s something that we started doing 7 years ago, and it never gets old. I get a lot of questions about our favorite restaurants, shows, and things to do. So, I’m sharing them all with you!
Back in 2011 Justin had the great idea to go to NYC together during the holidays. At the time we lived in Florida, and didn’t get much of a winter. So, this was not only the perfect time to experience some cooler weather, but also see the city during the most magical time of the year, Christmas! If you have never been to NYC during the holidays, you must! Yes, there are a lot of tourists during this time of the year, and yes it is really, really cold, but there is nothing more spectacular than all the decorations, the famous Rockefeller Center tree, and just the pure joy that’s in the air.
Every year there are a few things that we must do, and I highly recommend all of them, even if you have been to NYC before.
Ice Skating – our favorite spots are Bryant Park and Central Park. I’ve never done it at Rockefeller Center because it’s a smaller rink, more expensive, longer lines and overly crowded. These two usually aren’t too crowded (especially in the morning), and are definitely much cheaper. This is certainly not Justin’s favorite part of the trip, but he’s a good husband and appeases me.

Rockefeller Center – definitely visit the tree! It’s going to be the most crowded place because of course everyone wants to see the tree. But, if you go at night time, maybe after dinner, you usually have less of a crowd. Day or night it’s just absolutely gorgeous & so big!

Magnolia Bakery – who doesn’t like cupcakes right? What about cupcakes and the most wonderful hot chocolate…even better! Check out Magnolia Bakery! They have several locations throughout the city. The main one is right near Rockefeller Center & all the shops on 5th Ave. You may have a line, but it’s totally worth it. The most amazing Red Velvet cupcakes!

Central Park – this past year when we visited it was snowing! I had never seen Central Park covered in snow. It was truly like a winter wonderland. Snow or not, just check it out. You can take a nice walk, great place for photos, and enjoy lunch at Tavern on the Green. Tavern on the Green is an iconic New York restaurant that has been around for years. I first went as a kid with my family & still love visiting.

IL MULINO – Italian
Agave – great brunch spot for big groups
Lastly, a couple things that are worth checking out. If you can get into the Plaza Hotel, the Champagne Bar is amazing! It’s a little more challenging during the holidays because it’s typically only open to hotel guests, or you have to wait in line. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is definitely worth experiencing. It’s heavy, but an amazing documentation of our history. I recommend having something fun planned afterwards. Broadway shows are always great. We’ve seen Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Waitress, Elf & Kinky Boots. Another great show, and specific to the holidays is the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. Buy tickets ahead of time, or wait until you get there. You can usually get a good last minute deal on shows. I’m still hoping to see Hamilton! Stroll up and down 5th avenue. The window displays are incredible!
